In the China Sand Sculpture Art City at the Kumtag Desert Scenic Spot
located in Turpan of Xinjiang Autonomous Region, a sand sculpture
featuring famous scientist Peng Jiamu was completed. Staff members of the
art city were engaged in detailed embellishment on the sculpture on May
25. On June 17, 1980, when leading a scientific survey in Xinjiang's Lop
Nur, Peng went to search for water source alone and then somehow
disappeared. The Chinese government organized four large-scale search and
rescue actions but in vain. Peng had paid 15 visits to Xinjiang and made
investigations into the natural resources and conditions in Lop Nur for
three times, which unveiled the mystery of Lop Nur for the first time in
China's modern history.
