I think a combination of these two sites is probably the best bet for a beginner.
http://www.stpinyin.com/pinyin/pinyin.htm
Start from Pinyin: Alphabet of Pinyin (with .wav audio)
http://treehouse.ofb.net/go/zh-cn/ma.../pronunciation
Mandarin Chinese Pronunciation Guide (no audio)

These following sites are also helpful, but no single one is ideal for the beginner.
http://www.courses.fas.harvard.edu/~pinyin/#intro
Chinese pronunciation guide from Harvard's Chinese program (potentially good, but maybe
technologically a little out of date as I had trouble getting the RealAudio working).

http://weber.ucsd.edu/~dkjordan/chin/pinyin1.html
Guide to Pronouncing Mandarin in Romanized Transcription (audio provided).

http://www.csulb.edu/~txie/pcr/sound...rotopinyin.htm
A Brief Introduction to Romanized spelling system of Chinese - Pinyin (.wav audio).

http://chinese.rutgers.edu/class_con...ass1/intro.htm
Rutger University's Multi-Media Chinese Teaching System: Chinese Pronunciation (no audio for the
pinyin guide, but audio is provided for other online lessons).

http://www.pinyinpractice.com/tones.htm
This site is good for practicing your pinyin.

http://www.sinosplice.com/lang/pronunciation/
Pronunciation of Mandarin Chinese (great discussion, but a little technical and not for the
beginner).

Re: comparing the study of Chinese and Arabic

You can choose any major city to stay in in China. There will be plenty of opportunities to hear
standard Mandarin (there will be some accentual differences in different cities) nowadays
everywhere....

Improving ecological environment still a difficult task in west China

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-05 16:26:57

Chinanews, Beijing, July 5 C Over the past five years, China has
allocated a total of 200 billion yuan to improve the ecological
environment in the west. As a result, 600 million mu of trees have been
planted in the region. However, an official from the State Development
and Reform Commission pointed out that China still shouldered heavy
responsibilities for improving the ecological environment in the west.
Vice minister of the State Development and Reform Commission Wang
Jinxiang said that from 2000 to 2005, China had taken water and soil
conservation measures to prevent 540,000 square kilometers of land from
soil erosion. A total of 290 million mu of land has been transformed from
animal breeding grounds into pastures. In addition, China has improved
its construction work in the Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve.
Through these measures, basic farmland and pasture are protected against
wind and sand erosion. Both food output and farmers income have thus
increased. Many local herdsmen have gradually changed their lifestyle,
from a nomadic to a farmers life. Previously they destroyed forests to
raise their cattle, and now they plant trees and grass to ameliorate the
eco-enviroment.
Wang said that in recent years, more sandstorms had occurred in China
than before. In 2006, Beijing and Tianjin have experienced more sandstorm
weather than previous years. This should be a warning that China still
has much to do to improve the ecological environment in the west.

Measures taken to intensify IPR protection

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-23 14:10:38

Chinanews, Beijing, June 23 - The Ministry of Commerce of China (MOFCOM)
has started the construction of a nationwide platform for Intellectual
Property Right (IPR) assessment and early warning, as well as for
reporting of cases and complaints. It has also adopted effective measures
to intensify software IPR protection.
During the 4th China International Software & Information Service Fair
which was held in Dalian, government officials from the MOFCOM and the
Ministry of Information Industry (MII) expressed that they will intensify
IPR protection for the software industry, in order to provide a
supporting infrastructure for independent innovation in the IT industry
in China.
Yi Xiaozhun, Vice Minister of Commerce, stated that the MOFCOM would
continue to promote brand consciousness among enterprises, and intensify
IPR protection and supervision, thereby encouraging foreign enterprises
to invest into the software industry and set up high level software
research and development centers in China. "It is not only China's
commitment when it was admitted into the WTO, but it is also a long-term
developmental need for itself."
Lou Qinjian, Vice Minister of the MII, said that the MII would constantly
support independent innovation and help enterprises that engage in
independent innovation to obtain effective patent protection.

Xiaolangdi project began 5th water & sand control

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-15 17:31:45

The Xiaolangdi water conservancy project on the Yellow River commenced
water and sand control on June 14. This key project of China is carrying
out the fifth water and sand control from June 10 and July 5. According
to this year's preplan of water and sand control before the flood season,
Xiaolangdi reservoir pre-discharged water with a flow rate of 1,500 cubic
meters per second at 9am on June 10, and the flow rate will gradually
rise to 3,300 cubic meters per second. Starting 9 o'clock on the 15th,
per second stream flow at Huyuankou Station will be controlled at 3,500
cubic meters. To switch the situation that main river channel of lower
Yellow River is shrinking with shockingly piling up sand while the flood
running and sand delivering capacity reduced sharply. The river's water
conservancy committee undertook the experiment of water and sand control
for three successive years starting 2002, and the project was put on
stream last year.

June 7, a football concept house is set on the New City Square in Shatin,
Hong Kong to celebrate the advent of 2006 Football World Cup. Three
models put on striking football wears and holds footballs of different
time periods to show the history of football.

A football concept house from Japan stands on the New City Square in
Shatin, Hong Kong. The football concept house is made by 36 hexagon
water-proof boards, and looks like a huge football. Even earthquakes and
raindrops can harm it. The concept house is used to display the goods
related to football, and it does bring "new concepts" to the citizens of
Hong Kong.

In the China Sand Sculpture Art City at the Kumtag Desert Scenic Spot
located in Turpan of Xinjiang Autonomous Region, a sand sculpture
featuring famous scientist Peng Jiamu was completed. Staff members of the
art city were engaged in detailed embellishment on the sculpture on May
25. On June 17, 1980, when leading a scientific survey in Xinjiang's Lop
Nur, Peng went to search for water source alone and then somehow
disappeared. The Chinese government organized four large-scale search and
rescue actions but in vain. Peng had paid 15 visits to Xinjiang and made
investigations into the natural resources and conditions in Lop Nur for
three times, which unveiled the mystery of Lop Nur for the first time in
China's modern history.

22 embroidery works created by nine artists of Hunan-style embroidery in
ten years, named "millennium embroidery of world-famous heads of state,"
showed up in Changsha on May 17 and all visitors marveled at the works.
This series of works included 21 portraits of heads of state and a giant
embroidery depicting the heads of China, the United States, Russian, UK
and France at the Millennial Summit. The whole series of works took over
27,800 working days and can be regarded as an unprecedented masterpiece

A man was telling people how to make the ice-cream "snowman" on the spot
on May 14. On that day, a western-style restaurant in Liaoning's Dandong
City put on the street a "snowman" made of fresh soft ice-cream for
people to enjoy and taste for free. This 1.2-meter-tall and 84 kg
"snowman" with its chest circumference reaching 2.6 meters is made of
materials imported from Italy, and is big enough for 1,000 people to eat.

Oriental and Western cultures gather in Shanghai

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-04 12:38:12

Oriental and Western cultures gather in China's international
metropolis Shanghai. In the city's fashion landmark Xintiandi (new
world), foreign tourists went to exhibition halls that display the
traditional life of Shanghai's residents to experience Shanghai's
lifestyles in the 1920s and 1930s after enjoying a life in a metropolis
full of bars.

On the other hand, a jazz band composed of Chinese players showed up
in Shanghai's central business district and hoped to promote sales for
vendors by attracting passers-by thorough Western jazz music.
